BF.7: the most infectious Omicron sub-variant today

Data from China tell us that the new Omicron sub-variant designated as BA.5.2.1.7 (BF. 7 for short) is the most infectious sub-variant that we know today. The average transmissibility, or R0, of Omicron sub-variants in general is 5.08. This means 1 person can infect 5.08 people. However, the R0 of BF.7 is 10 to 18.6. This means 1 person can infect 10 to 18.6 people. It has a shorter incubation period and has a mutation in its spike protein which makes it more difficult to be neutralized by antibodies produced by previous infections or generated from vaccinations.

The symptoms of BF.7 are similar to those of other Omicron subvariants which include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and fatigue. Vomiting and diarrhea may also be observed in some cases. People with weak immune systems may experience more severe symptoms. A lot of cases are asymptomatic which adds up to its ability to be transmitted before being detected.

BF.7 is already being documented in other countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and some European countries, but for now, there are no indications that it is spreading in those countries as rapidly as in China.

The COVID-19 virus continues to evolve. The WHO says vaccination is still the most effective way to combat it. There is no reason to be alarmed for now but basic public health guidelines should not be taken for granted including hand washing, improving ventilation, wearing masks in public, and social distancing. At the very least, it would be inconvenient to get sick.

Stay safe always.
